InnoRail appointed by Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE)

The InnoRail team are delighted to have been appointed by the Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) to support them as the project gains momentum.

The project, which is the first of its kind across the UK and Europe, includes two test tracks which will be used as a base for development of railway infrastructure for the future. To deliver real-life scenarios, GCRE require expert support to review and advise on the assumptions and working theories which have underpinned the plans thus far.

InnoRail’s team will bring knowledge of the rail industry to comprehensively appraise the Operations and Vehicle Maintenance elements of the plan and ensure functional success. This piece of work will be intrinsic to the project team preparing for future rounds of funding for the scheme.

Based in South Wales, GCRE will be a world-leading, ‘one stop shop’ for innovation and research. It will support the modernisation, decarbonisation and diversification of the railway and provide much-needed employment for the area.

It will be operational for 24-hours a day and provide both rolling stock and infrastructure test tracks, alongside storage, maintenance, operations and staff facilities. InnoRail’s guidance will ensure that safety considerations specific to the depot, and across the full site, are wholly considered from an operations perspective. This will include recommendations on: staffing levels and skills required; design effectiveness; equipment best practice; and management of the build.

This piece of work will require close collaboration with the GCRE team to fully understand the processes undertaken thus far and the resultant assumptions that have been built upon. InnoRail’s hands-on experience of railway, operations and depot management will support the project team in forming a thorough, operations-led strategy. We anticipate that our work will enable GCRE to progress confidently into the next phase of the scheme.
